Inspection under the Bonnet While Buying a Used Car

There is no need to become a mechanic to perform a reasonable or basic inspection under the bonnet before purchasing a used car. Taking the car to a mechanic can provide the best insight, even though there are many items you can check yourself. There is no need of any tool requirement except a few clean rags. The inspection has to perform before the vehicle start and the engine is off. And second time is after the car is properly warm up.

Battery: Batteries have sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive. Check for signs of corrosion at the area around the battery and battery terminals. This indicates a leaking or a bad battery. Clean with baking soda around that area, if needed. Check for whether the battery is firmly attached to the frame.

When the car is running, loose battery vibrate excessively and eventually the battery terminals may loosen. Check for the adequate water levels in each cell. For maintenance, free batteries there is no need to check for water levels.

Radiator: The engine must be cool at anytime when the radiator cap is removed. There is no need to look at the color of the radiator fluid, because the colors are vary as per the brand. Check for any metal particles floating in the fluid. The oil in the radiator coolant may indicate a leaking gasket or a cracked cylinder head.

Engine oil: A build up of sludge and thick or dirty oil may indicate a lack of proper maintenance. Milky or Grey colored oil may means presence of water and can lead to serious engine problems.

Check for Engine number and VIN: Check for the engine number and the vehicle identification number or body number. The numbers on the certificate of registration and these numbers must have to match. The vehicle identification number contains numbers and letter and it is the unique identity of the car.

If you are unable to find the number, ask the seller to point out the number to you. If you did not find the number or the number is not matched with the documents, you should not buy the car. Check for signs of interference like drill holes, grind marks, scratches etc. These are the illegal interference with the numbers.

An engine with oil or dirt may indicate poor maintenance or or mechanical problems. While engine is idle check or listen for any knocking or rattling or irregular running noises. Check for the signs of different shade in the engine bay. This is called as over spray and it may indicates that the car met a crash and the paint sprayed again. Know How Engine Control Unit of Your Car Works

The engine control unit (ECU) is also known as engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM). The engine control unit is a small computerized unit. The function of this unit is getting information from the sensors and run some automatic tasks accordingly. If there are any errors or problems in the engine control module, it will give signals in the form of light on the dashboard. If you have little knowledge and skill on this you can clean the system for optimization by yourself.
  • Time: The engine control unit regulates the spark time to start the engine. If there is any issue, it adjusts the time accordingly.
  • Fuel: The engine control unit adjusts the fuel release during acceleration. It will send the signal to inject fuel based on the gas pedal pressing.
  • Air: The air sensors control unit makes sure that optimal temperature and flow are maintained. It does as follows:
    • The air temperature (IAT) sensor gives the signals of air temperature at which air is going into the engine. When the temperature of the air is low, the car performance is high. Generally located at the pipe going from the air filter box to the throttle body or on the air filter box.
    • The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine. It contains a heat sensing element. The temperature of this element has to be constant. But because of air inflow the temperature will decrease. The engine control unit uses this information to adjust the spark ignition timing and injector pulse width.
    • The bar sensor measures the air pressure. With this signal, the engine control unit recognize the current attitude of the vehicle.
    • The RPM of the engine is steadily observed by the idle air control valve.
  • Coolant: If the engine is too cool, it will consume excess gasoline. On the other hand, if it is too hot the head gasket leaks. To give good functionality of the engine, the temperature is important. The coolant is a liquid. It is used in vehicle's radiator to maintain the temperature. The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor gives prompts the engine control unit when the heat is high, and will send signal to run the radiator fan to decrease the temperature of the coolant liquid.

  • The accelerator pedal is linked with the throttle position sensor (TPS). It gives the signals to the engine control unit about the movements of accelerator pedal.
If any sensor fails or continuously shows the same reading for a long time, the engine control unit ignores the signals of that sensor and get into the safe mode. Sensors are very important they make sure to start the car when needed.

If you are unable to find the location check your owner's manual. The fuse can test with multimeter ohms settings. And then test main control to ensure the power is receiving. It has twelve volts direct current. If the problem is not in the main control, look for the broken wire which is going to the control panel. If the windows are working occasionally the problem might be in the wiring.
  • Problems with motors: Window motors can fail because of the old or aged. When a motor is receiving power or voltage but not working means it is failed. So the motor has to be replaced. Accessing the motor area is difficult. You can purchase new motor for that. Follow the instructions to install the motor, if anything given. • Tracks: When the tracks were broken the window can stuck. It is also occurred when opening forcefully during the freezing conditions. Remove the door panel manually and check the track whether the window seated correctly or not. We can break the small plastic components which are causing for system malfunction on the windows track. Replacing of the broken plastic components is not a difficult. These can be available at auto supply stores.

Windshield Wipers Working Mechanism

In the past, the windshield wipers are operated manually, inside the car by moving lever back and forth. Today, these are operating with electric power. By moving back and forth, they are sweeping water away across the windshield countless times and keep clear. We can find the windshield wipers car windshields, on some cars headlights, airplanes and space shuttles. Now we will discuss in detail about them.
  • Inside of the wipers: To perform the task, the wipers combine two mechanical technologies. Those are a combination of worm gear and electric motor, and a neat linkage. Worm gear reduction and electric motor provides power. The linkage converts the rotational output of motor into back and forth motion.
    • Gear reduction and motor: To accelerate the wiper blades across windshield back and forth quickly, a lot of force is required. To generate this type of force, worm gear is used. It multiplies the motor torque by about fifty times. An electric circuit inside the gear assembly or motor senses when the wipers are at their down position. Until the wipers parked at bottom of the windshield, circuit maintains the power, after that it cuts the power to motor.
    • Linkage: A short can, which is attached to gear reduction’s output shaft, spins around as wiper motor turns. This cam connects to a long rod. It moves the rod back and forth as the cam spins. Long rod connected to a short rod actuates wiper blade on the driver's side. Another long rod transmits force to the passenger side wiper blade from driver side.
  • Blades: The thin rubber strips of the wiper clear the water across windshield. When the blades are new, the rubbers are clean and no cracks or nicks, without leaving any streaks it wipe away the water. When these are old, cracks or nicks build up on the edge from road grime. It do not make tight a seal and leaves streaks.
  • Control: Most of the windshield wipers have a high, a low speed setting, and an intermittent setting. When the wipers are on high or low speed setting, the motor is continuously works. On the intermittent setting, the wipers stop between each type.
In the past automakers tried either to control the wipers speed automatically or to eliminate the wipers. Some of those are detecting the vibrations, which are caused by individual raindrops hitting windshield. These are need not wiped at all. When they sensed automatically they wipe. However, this system was failed due to inconvenience of drivers. The new system uses the optical sensors to detect the moisture. The sensor mounted near rear view mirror projects into the windshield an infrared light at forty-five degree angle. If there are any water droplets, the less light makes back into the sensor. When the amount of the light is less than the preset level, the software and the electronics turn on the wipers.

Vitamin D deficiency is seen more in children who do not have the ability to adsorb this vitamin. It leads to a condition called “rickettsia”, which means improper formation of leg bones (deformation). It also leads to muscle weakness and poor growth of muscles. Vitamin C deficiency symptoms are oozing of blood from gums, improper teeth formation and a condition called “scurvy”.

Vitamin B complex is very important for the development of immune system. Deficiency of vitamin B complex results in poor fighting ability against diseases, they are more susceptible to diseases and the recovery is slow.

What Kind of Toothpaste should I Use for Children?

Brushing your kids' teeth is necessary and one of the most important things you need to do for maintaining their good oral health. This involves removing the plaque and debris from their teeth and helps them prevent tooth decay and keep them healthy.

There are many types of toothpastes available, if your child is able to spit the toothpaste, use fluoride toothpaste. Use the toothpaste of pea sized for children age 3 and above. If the child is doing for him/herself, check whether they have covered all the teeth or not. If you do it, you can brush more easily and effectively, because you can see all the teeth and gum line in better way and this also allow you to identify the areas that require more cleaning.

If the child is under two years, it is better if you use toothpaste without fluoride and for below 12 months, a wet brush is enough to clean your child's teeth. If the child is three years or older and s still not able to or is not honed the skill of brush and spit properly, use a toothpaste without fluoride, because swallowing too much fluoridated toothpaste leads to permanent discoloration of teeth.

When choosing toothpaste for your children, be very careful, because the toothpastes and polishes may damage the child's teeth as they contain harsh abrasives that may take away the young tooth enamel. So the toothpaste you use for your child should be ADA sealed, because toothpastes manufactured under these norms are safe. Therefore, next time when you shop for your child toothpaste, look for ADA seal.

What differentiates a good hotel from others?

Many people travel in summer for tourism, vacations like wedding etc. So there will be need of hotels. So sometimes it will be difficult to choose hotels for such vacations and get good rate. To get a good rate on hotels here are tips to follow:

Try to search for some discount sites:
If you want a hotel at affordable rate search for the sites that offer discounts. But here the thing is that for the discount sites, you need to pay the bill in advance; therefore for some people want to break the deal in middle, of course some sites will not offer much discount, if they do, definitely it will be negated in their fees. It is, therefore, better visit some best or credible sites over the location and pick some hotels from them as per your level from the area that you want to tour and select one of them in the city to visit all the tourist locations.

Better if you shop around the online:
If you have not choose the place where to go, then it is better if you shop around for hotels and check for the rates, and also check the websites of your favorite hotels, pick up one location as per your choice or search for the websites that offer hotel discount reservation services that may help you in saving the rates of hotels considerably, but as above said that they will charge for the booking fees. So it is better if you search through online and find one or two good and lowest price hotels, you can directly call them and check if they can match you.

Better If You Call the Hotel Directly:
Some hotels may not specify all the offering in the Internet, so it is better if you call the hotel directly to know what all the special offers at present are. By this you may get better rate instead of booking online.

Join rewards clubs:
Every hotel will have the rewards clubs. So join that club, of course, it may take you time to build the points but you will find some benefits like from breakfasts to free nights that may pile up. Here no need of paying the fee it is off free to join and you have nothing to lose.

These are the some of the tips to follow to get a best hotel rate.
