What is the Treatment for Mouth Ulcers in Children?

Mouth ulcers or mouth sores in children is a rare problem which causes discomfort while eating or drinking. These sores are not very dangerous or not contagious because they can't pass from one person to another like other diseases. So, they are not usually considered as a serious problem. Most mouth sores generally heal on their own without any treatment. And some sores can be managed and treated at home only.

Causes:
Your child may get mouth ulcers or mouth sores due to

  • Illness
  • Stress
  • Hard brushing of teeth
  • An injury to the mouth
  • Biting of the inner cheeks
  • Food allergies
  • Viral infections
  • Vitamins deficiency

Treatment:
Most mouth sores or canker sores subside on their own without any treatment. Some may need some basic treatment at home and some may become more problematic and consult a doctor depending on the pain.

  • Avoid spicy or hot food.
  • For brushing teeth, a toothbrush that is soft is advised.
  • Cold liquids, ice may help soothe mouth pain.
  • Have your child rinse his/her mouth with salt and warm water or baking soda in warm water and see that your child doesn't swallow this mouth wash.
  • Give your child over the counter medicine like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to treat pain and fever.

Consult a doctor:
If the child is suffering with canker sore or mouth ulcers for a couple of weeks and you are unable to confirm it as a canker sore or anything else. If your child is unable to eat or drink sufficient amount or if your child seems to get canker or mouth sores more frequently then consult your doctor to discuss the problem and to get rid of the problem.
