Know the Health Risks of Periodontal Disease During Pregnancy

Pregnant women should be more careful to maintain their dental health. Otherwise, it affects the health of the child as well as the mother. It has been found that periodontal diseases (infection of gums) is more common among pregnant women as their gum tissues are softened by the pregnancy hormones. As a result, they are more prone to bacterial infections.

Gum diseases among pregnant women have lot of effects on the children. As per the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontal disease during pregnancy includes seven times more chances of premature delivery. The babies born will be premature and underweight. The gums are vascular and any bacterial infection in the gum of the mother can enter the circulatory system. Through this system, the fetus get infected leading to the failure to thrive. As a result, the baby is born much early with a weight below the normal range. Also, the baby delivered by a pregnant women with periodontal disease is stillborn. According to the American Dental Association, it has been said that a bacterial species called Fusobacterium nucleatum causing gum disease travels through the mother's blood vessels to the uterus. The fetus swallows and even inhales the amniotic fluid and hence, the infection enters the fetus also. This leads to the death of the fetus and stillbirth.

The onset of periodontal disease during pregnancy even causes several health effects in the mother. It increases the chances of problems related to tooth loss, respiratory problems, stroke and diabetes. In order to avoid these health risks, good oral hygiene including brushing and flossing daily should be followed. Also, regular visits to dentist should be scheduled for dental cleaning.

Pregnancy is not an Exemption from Doing Yoga

Unlike in all other exercises there is no need to stop the practice of yoga when some body knows that they are about to conceive. They can undoubtedly continue yoga by making little changes in the techniques and postures which they used to do regularly. In fact there are some prenatal yoga classes which are offered especially to pregnant women.

During the time of pregnancy the body will undergo a lot of changes both physically and mentally. To cope up with those changes yoga was proved effective. It aids pregnant women in enhancing breathing and thus providing relaxation both to the body and mind. Breathing exercises are the important part of the procedure which are designed to relax and calm the body during delivery. The breathing technique connected to the yoga helps to calm the mind by eliminating any kind of stress which can be harmful during pregnancy.

Yoga also helps in relieving pains during pregnancy. The regular practice of yogic exercises meant for the pregnant women improves the flexibility, blood circulation, and muscle toning. It helps in the physical and mental development of the fetus and thus ensures a healthy baby. Yoga also helps in improvement of the blood supply and nutrients to the developing fetus.

The essential thing is one should know their limitations and make sure that the postures are aligning with the changes occurred in the body. Avoiding dangerous postures which include inverted postures, lying down on the belly, lying completely on the back is very important. If they feel uncomfortable in doing any postures its better to stop and go with the breathing exercises.

Along with practicing yoga it is also important to follow balanced diet which keeps both the mother and the baby healthy. Properly warm up while you are starting your session and cool down steadily once you are done with it.

Adverse Effects of Cocaine During Pregnancy

The affect of any kind of drug either legal or illegal was proved to show more harmful effects on women when compared to men. Women will get affected more quickly by the negative effects caused by drug abuse. Majority of women using drugs are getting affected in different ways depending upon the amount of consumption and the duration of use. Pregnant women are also not exempted from the victims of drug addiction. In spite of knowing the fact that drug abuse will not only harm them but also the baby they are going to give birth, people are still doing it. This is because of the strong addiction to such kind of drugs which makes them ignore about the reality and harm.

According to recent studies, 15% of all Americans admitted that they are having Cocaine and around 2-3% are regular users of it. Cocaine is of low molecular weight and Islipophilic. These properties of cocaine helps the drug to easily get diffused in placenta. Then it easily reaches fetus, rising the harmful effects on placenta. Maternal hypertension and direct vasoconstruction of uterine vessels can comprise blood flow to placenta. This results in less oxygen supply to fetus and probably also results in decreased nutrient supply to it. Like this, cocaine increases the risk of complications in pregnancy, which may sometimes result in fetal death.

In some cases, drug abuse also results in placental abruption which shows a direct and dramatic affect on the mothers health. This abruption also results in secondary risks including intrauterine deaths. There are certain conditions in which the baby can be born with drug syndromes such as less weight, deformation in the organs, with some health problems etc. Is it correct to spoil the health and future of the innocent children even before they come to the earth? So, please think something beyond you. Don't punish the kids for something which they are not to be. Get away from all the addictions at least for the sake of your children.
