Barcode technology can have applications in many areas. Barcode labels contain data or information of a particular product. These labels are created by barcode printer. Various models of barcodes are created by different types of printers. The most advanced types of barcode printers are thermal printers which are of two types: direct thermal barcode printer and thermal transfer barcode printer. The above two types of printers differ from each other in their way of functioning. Ink, toner, and ribbon are not used by direct thermal printers. The images are printed directly on treated barcode labels. The labels are first treated with some chemicals. These are heat-sensitive labels and are used for printing by the direct thermal barcode printer. When these labels are passed under thermal printhead of the printer, they get blackened which creates the code.
The design of these printers is simple and hence can be used easily. The cost of these printers is also lesser than ink-jet, laser, and thermal transfer barcode printers. As these printers do not use ink or toner or ribbon, their maintenance is also easy. Direct thermal printing technology is used by most mobile printers.

What is the Difference Between Linear and 2D Barcodes

Generally barcode system contains the barcodes, external database, barcode labels, scanners and printers. Barcodes labels are printed on different products or items by barcode printers. Barcodes are many types, but 1D and 2D are basic types of them. There are few differences between them, such as:

Linear barcodes:

The data on these barcodes is stored in horizontal direction, because linear barcodes consists of vertical bars and spaces. Barcodes are considered as one dimensional barcodes.

2D barcodes:
These barcodes have more data representation capability. They can contain more information in detail. They are in a matrix or stacked format. These barcodes can store data in both horizontal and vertical directions of a barcode. They can encode several thousands of characters, which a machine can read.

Large amount of data can be stored in these barcodes in a smaller space, so they can save the space. Though barcode is damaged, information or data can be retrieved by the these barcodes. Zebra printers are best to read these types of barcodes.
